Stipa gigantea is an evergreen grass that shows off features akin to its common name, Golden Oats. The plant has arching, linear leaves of green colour that is joined by long-awned flowers of a purplish tone. These will turn gold over time as they ripen. The golden colour is where the common name comes from, giving this grass wonderful colour and added character. This attractive Stipa variety will look great in borders, pots or containers.
A plant with a tufted habit and hardy nature, you will find very little trouble when caring for and maintaining it. It will prefer exposure to full sunlight, tolerates most soil types around and it should be watered so the soil is moist, well-drained and never dry to touch.

Water Stipa plants regularly during dry periods, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. They are drought-tolerant once established but benefit from deep watering in hot weather. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.

Plant Stipa in well-draining soil with full sun. Dig a hole large enough to spread the roots, then backfill with soil. Space plants 45-60cm apart to allow for their graceful, arching growth. Water gently after planting to settle the soil.
