Product description

Cereus jamacaru f. cristatus is a fascinating sculptural specimen where the natural growth point has mutated, causing it to fan out into a wavy, coral-like crest rather than a single upright column. Known as the "Broken Top Cactus," every plant is unique, forming artistic ridges and folds that make it a striking focal point for a table or shelf. It is a slow-growing variety compared to its standard cousins, allowing it to remain in the same pot for several years without becoming unmanageable.

To protect the delicate crest, it is best to position this plant in bright, indirect light or full sun, ensuring it is acclimatised slowly to prevent scorching. Watering requires precision; you must water the soil directly and avoid pouring water into the folds of the crest, as trapped moisture can quickly lead to rot. Use a gritty, free-draining cactus compost and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

Please Note: When purchasing plants please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. Decorative pot not included, the plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

Rotate your pot by a quarter turn every time you water. Cereus jamacaru cristata naturally lean towards the strongest light source, which can cause them to grow crooked. Regular rotation ensures the plant receives even light exposure on all sides. This helps it maintain a straight, symmetrical shape as it matures.

How to Water

Adopt the 'Soak and Dry' method to mimic the Cereus jamacaru cristata natural environment. Water the soil thoroughly until excess water flows freely from the drainage holes, then discard any saucer water immediately. Allow the soil to dry out completely from top to bottom before watering again. If you are ever unsure, wait a few more days; it is always safer to be too dry than too wet.

How to Plant

Always select a container with sufficient drainage holes to prevent root rot. Use a specialized 'Cactus & Succulent' potting mix or create your own blend by mixing 50% compost with 50% grit. When handling the Cereus jamacaru cristata, protect your hands by using kitchen tongs or a thick folded towel. Plant the cactus at the same depth it was in its previous pot, as burying the green stem can lead to rot. Finish with a top dressing of gravel to keep the plant's base dry.
