Stetsonia coryne is widely recognized for its incredibly long, rigid central spines that resemble wooden toothpicks or knitting needles. The spines typically darken to black or dark brown as they age, adding a dramatic contrast to the green body. It is one of the most formidably armed cacti available and serves as a striking, albeit dangerous, specimen.
Position this cactus in the brightest, sunniest location available to ensure the spines grow to their full length. Water strictly only when the soil is bone dry, as this species is highly drought-resistant. Use a very gritty, free-draining cactus mix and ensure the pot is placed in a stable location where it cannot be accidentally bumped.

Rotate your pot by a quarter turn every time you water. Stetsonia coryne naturally lean towards the strongest light source, which can cause them to grow crooked. Regular rotation ensures the plant receives even light exposure on all sides. This helps it maintain a straight, symmetrical shape as it matures.
How to Water
Adopt the 'Soak and Dry' method to mimic the Stetsonia coryne natural environment. Water the soil thoroughly until excess water flows freely from the drainage holes, then discard any saucer water immediately. Allow the soil to dry out completely from top to bottom before watering again. If you are ever unsure, wait a few more days; it is always safer to be too dry than too wet.
How to Plant
Always select a container with sufficient drainage holes to prevent root rot. Use a specialized 'Cactus & Succulent' potting mix or create your own blend by mixing 50% compost with 50% grit. When handling the Stetsonia coryne, protect your hands by using kitchen tongs or a thick folded towel. Plant the cactus at the same depth it was in its previous pot, as burying the green stem can lead to rot. Finish with a top dressing of gravel to keep the plant's base dry.
