Cleistocactus winteri f. cristatus is a quirky natural mutation of the Golden Rat Tail cactus that grows in a convoluted, brain-like mound instead of long trailing stems. The winding, worm-like ridges are covered in fine, golden-yellow spines that give the plant a warm, fuzzy texture and a glowing appearance in the sunlight. It is a compact, slow-growing oddity that is perfect for small pots and detailed collections, often serving as a conversation piece due to its unusual shape.
Ideally, place this cactus in bright, indirect light rather than scorching midday sun to protect the delicate crested tissue. It needs a highly porous cactus mix with plenty of grit to ensure rapid drainage, as the dense mound makes it difficult for soil underneath to dry if it is too heavy.
