Cleistocactus strausii is instantly recognizable by its slender, vertical columns that are completely covered in fine, silvery-white spines, giving it the appearance of a frozen or snow-covered torch. Despite its soft, fuzzy appearance which invites touch, the bristles underneath are quite sharp, so it should be handled with care. Mature specimens are capable of producing narrow, tubular red flowers that jut out horizontally from the main stem to attract pollinators.
The Silver Torch requires a position in full sun to keep the white spines dense and the growth thick; insufficient light will lead to skinny, unattractive stems. Use a loose, rocky soil mixture that allows air to reach the roots and prevents waterlogging. Water regularly during the hot summer months but keep the plant almost completely dry during its winter dormancy to simulate its high-altitude habitat.

Rotate your pot by a quarter turn every time you water. Cleistocactus strausii naturally lean towards the strongest light source, which can cause them to grow crooked. Regular rotation ensures the plant receives even light exposure on all sides. This helps it maintain a straight, symmetrical shape as it matures.
How to Water
Adopt the 'Soak and Dry' method to mimic the Cleistocactus strausii natural environment. Water the soil thoroughly until excess water flows freely from the drainage holes, then discard any saucer water immediately. Allow the soil to dry out completely from top to bottom before watering again. If you are ever unsure, wait a few more days; it is always safer to be too dry than too wet.
How to Plant
Always select a container with sufficient drainage holes to prevent root rot. Use a specialized 'Cactus & Succulent' potting mix or create your own blend by mixing 50% compost with 50% grit. When handling the Cleistocactus strausii, protect your hands by using kitchen tongs or a thick folded towel. Plant the cactus at the same depth it was in its previous pot, as burying the green stem can lead to rot. Finish with a top dressing of gravel to keep the plant's base dry.
